Fun backing that up which is why RAID6 is handy (and still need backups).ĭrive cases that use hot swap drive trays can let you put a project on a drive and treat it like a 1TB floppy and keep it off line until needed too. Or large archives of photo files running on 4TB. There are people with 8-12 drive scratch RAIDs (2 x 5 drive enclosures) to get scratch I/O in the 750MB/sec range. I would only use 15K SCSI in the past but the cost got to me, and the noise, which is a shame because they now push into and past the 100MB/sec in SAS. That gives some basic ideas to play around as possible configurations. There are some nice RocketRAID 2314s for $199-299.

Anything with Port Multiplier lets you run 5 drive case on one cable / one channel. The RocketRAID model that supports RAID6 would be first choice.Ģnd Sonnet. You don't need to spend $1000 on Apple Pro RAID unless you want SAS. That leaves the four internal drive bays for scratch or something. You make a list before you go on a cross-country trip of what supplies you need and where you will be driving with places to stop and see along the way.

SOFTRAID REVIEW MANUAL
I wouldn’t recommend buying these, but I would recommend getting something else from Best Buy as they are great and stand behind the products they sell, and will make it right if you have problems.By reading reviews, articles, and Apple Help for Disk Utility and search Apple Support for RAID for starters.Īlso, download the pdf manual from SoftRAID please. Hopefully these last a while, like they are supposed to. The thing I will say is Best Buy’s customer service was excellent in handling this. I’ve only had these running for a couple weeks now, and everything’s finally working, so that’s good. I am honestly disappointed, and in hindsight wish I would’ve gone with another brand or option. The other thing is that these run significantly louder than my old drives. Now I have 4 perfect drives that all work great, but given that it took 6 drives to get 4 good ones, doesn’t reflect very good quality control on Western Digital’s part.

Anyways, I took the defective drives back to Best Buy and exchanged them for new ones (which had to be reordered, obviously). According to SoftRAID drives with bad sectors are 40 times more likely to fail than those without. 2 of the 4 drives had reallocated sectors indicating the potential for premature drive failure. I ordered 4 of these and then used SoftRAID to verify and certify them. I previously had 4 Toshiba 3 TB NAS/Enterprise drives installed but I needed more space. I have an OWC ThunderBay 4 RAID unit running RAID 10 (1+0), and it uses SoftRAID to manage it.
